Dozens of dead and tens of thousands of homes destroyed. In July 1997, Moravia and Silesia experienced the most devastating flood in the past 100 years. This year, a quarter of a century has passed since the disaster. And this is not the only sad anniversary, as in August it will be 20 years since one of the worst floods in the Czech Republic. Remind yourself of sadness, fear and hope in the tragic days with the diary. Until the end of the holiday, read the 1997/2002 flood event day by day.

August 29, 2002: The Championship is in danger
In the Czech Republic, demolition of irreparably damaged homes continues in flood-affected areas. For example, demolitions in Zálezlice are in full swing. Because of the scale of the devastation caused by the rising water level, the village has become one of the sad symbols of the devastation experienced in the past days.
A burning issue is the rapid construction of new homes for those who lost their roofs over their heads in the flood. For example, the government offers municipalities a state subsidy program for the construction of prefabricated houses.
Newspapers of the time are discussing how the floods will affect the World Hockey Championships, which will be held in Prague and Ostrava in 2004. For example, Zemské noviny writes about the fact that the Prague budget is reduced after the floods, from which the money will be poured out primarily for the repair of flood damage It is therefore not certain whether money will be saved to pay for the construction of access roads to the emerging hall where the tournament will be held.
2002 flood
• The flood affected the area in the basins of the Vltava and Elbe rivers, and later also Ohi and Deje, so it was mainly southern, central and northern Bohemia. However, even Moravia was not spared from the rising water level. At the same time, it has caused disaster abroad, especially in Germany, Poland, Slovakia, and Austria-Hungary
The flood affected a third of the area of the Czech Republic
• The floods were caused by heavy rains
• The first wave of floods occurred mainly between August 7-9, 2002, but unlike the flood of 1997, the second wave of flood that swept the country between August 12-16, 2002 had much worse results.
• The flows had the character of millennium floods in some places
• 17 people and 134 animals died from the Prague Zoo, and thousands of homes were destroyed or damaged
The damage amounted to 73 billion kroner
