Czech women’s volleyball players concluded their sovereign career in the European Championship qualifiers with a victory over Iceland. From the very beginning, coach Janis Athanasopoulos deployed volleyball players, who played little in the successful qualifying. Only crossbar Ella Coliciani remains from the regular starting line-up, with only three average players in the current squad. The match was only tied at 9:9 in the first set.

“I think at first it was a bit tense, because we got a chance for those who didn’t have such a burden in the game,” 18-year-old defender Lucy Blashkova said in a press release.
The first set was broken by teammate Colliciani, when the Czechs jumped by six points. Since then they haven’t had the slightest problem. “It took us a while to get into it. But we gradually improved all our activities, especially the sending, and we managed it to the end.”
Coach Athanasopoulos praised the second six’s performance. “I could see that they didn’t have the right rhythm because they didn’t get the chance to play. But as time went by, the level went up, the girls played very well and responded to the match better.” Most of the team shared the points equally. Smečařka Eva Hodanová scored 11 each, with Petra Valtinova, Kogdova and Blakova 10, and Kolesani nine.
The season for the national team does not end
The team’s season does not end with the successful qualification of the Czech volleyball players. At the beginning of September and October, the world championships await them in the Netherlands. They will enter it on September 24 against the Brazilian favorites.
“We haven’t been able to train enough during this form of the tournament. We’re still traveling, we had some viral issues and we weren’t quite fit. Now we will finally rest for three days and as soon as we meet again we will try to get in the best shape possible before the world championships,” The Greek coach also planned for the Czech national team.
