The entire building is occupied by construction workers. It’s hard to believe that violin scales or a dance teacher’s instructions would soon be heard outside the door. Last academic year, 750 pupils attended the school.

“We are in the corridor to the dance section. This is where they dismantle the old windows and prepare the space for the new ones,” Anna Mikulova, director of the Havichov School of Art, exhibiting the school premises.

Temporary doormat protects her desk from dust. “We have tried to start renovation work on the school premises, which we will put to best use since the beginning of the school year, and it is the music classes most affected by this renovation,” explains the principal.

Music and construction site

The reconstruction budget is about 30 million crowns, and it is estimated to end next January. Until then, teaching and construction must be combined.

“We expect that as soon as the classes begin, which take place in our school in the afternoon, the noisy work will not be carried out. This was clear to the company from the beginning. Now they work all day, but once the school starts, the noisy work should be limited, ”explains the director Mikulova.

Saving isn’t just for school

The goal is to achieve maximum savings in energy costs. New windows, exterior blinds, or facades are just the start. The school will use its own solar energy from rooftop panels.

“Any surpluses will be handed over to the local distribution network. The project also includes the construction of air conditioners. The art and music classrooms will have a combined recreation unit with automated organization,” describes the project prepared by Miroslava Shlebunova for the Moravian-Silesian region.

According to the school principal, it’s a good idea to do everything at once. And that this is reflected in the electricity meters. “Of course we hope to save some money,” he adds.

next in order

Schools covered by photovoltaic cells are beginning to increase rapidly throughout the Moravian-Silesian region, and plans are being adjusted accordingly.

“For example, ZUŠ Klimkovice, ZŠ Čkalovova Ostrava-Poruba or the Krnov Transport and Tourism Vocational Secondary School will receive photovoltaics. Among the currently completed projects that contribute to building self-sufficiency, is the installation of a photovoltaic power plant in the building of the Mikulas Kopernik High School in Belovic and at Sagabo’s house in Brunntal ”, according to the lists of Miroslava Shlepunova.

And it’s not just schools. “The nursing home in Kopchevnitsy, which is currently being built, will be equipped not only with a photovoltaic power plant, but also with a cogeneration unit,” adds Shlebunov.

The Moravian-Silesian region will also use the energy self-sufficiency experience of the Havinovsk Elementary Art School in further renovations.

Because of the energies, designers and builders are also busy in hospitals. There we will look at the next part of the series, where we will move on to Kutná Hora.
