Prague and the South Bohemia region will help families who are threatened by high prices, in other places they are not ready to do so

A contribution to children’s clubs, assistance with housing costs for the elderly or a waiver of school lunch fees – this type of assistance has been prepared independently by Prague and the South Bohemia region for their residents and families threatened with price hikes. Other regions are not planning similar steps.

South Bohemia will help low-income families pay for housing for clubs for children and seniors at risk.

The capital has allocated a total of 800 million crowns to help. Child support will be available from September, and for housing from January through the end of next year.

The South Bohemia region has allocated 250 million kroner to help, but it depends on the 50 percent participation of municipalities and cities to support housing. The aid project will run from September to January.

The reasons why other regions are not taking similar steps are basically the same. The regions fear that in the current situation they will not have enough money in the budget for heating and lighting in schools, medical facilities and social services, of which they are the founders.

The state must help

Therefore, they do not have the means for such social support. According to some conservatives, social assistance is the task of the state, not the provinces.

“I cannot imagine that in some regions people are entitled to some benefits and not in others. In my opinion, the Czech Republic is a unitary state, which means that this social legislation must be the same, and it does not matter if the person is from South Bohemia or Pardubice or any other region,” said Pardubice Governor Martin Nitolicki (ČSSD).

However, Prague objects that its actions do not replace state aid and that assistance in applying for state social assistance benefits will be part of it.

“The measures in the package are not intended to replace state aid, but are intended to adequately supplement it. A number of people fall out of the state support system due to oversight mechanisms, although they deserve it,” said Vit Hoffmann, a spokesman for the Prague municipality. “.

According to experts, it is certainly not against the constitution or other laws of regions to decide their social policy.

“The law doesn’t quite specify what regions should or shouldn’t do, but regions know the population and their reactions better than the centre, of course,” said Martin Boczek, a public and social policy expert from Charles’ School of Social Sciences. University.
