During the holidays, 82 people have died in traffic accidents in the Czech Republic so far, the lowest death toll in the history of the Czech Republic according to police statistics. Last year, accidents in July and August claimed 100 lives, a year ago the figure was 98, the lowest level so far. So far, 47 people died in traffic accidents in the Czech Republic in August, eight fewer than in the whole of August last year. Police statistics record 35 victims for the month of July.

Jerry Zelly, the director of the Traffic Police, announced the statistics on Tuesday. He added that the figure for August of this year is preliminary.

However, the number of casualties in the first eight months of the year is still higher compared to last year. So far this year, accidents have claimed 306 lives, and eight fewer people have died from the beginning of January to the end of August last year.

In August, according to the spokesman, the dead included 20 motorists, 11 motorcyclists, six cyclists, five occupants and three pedestrians. The most tragic accident occurred on August 3 and 24, when three people died in each.

On the third day of August, a truck on the D5 crashed near Benešovice in the Tachovsk region. Break through the center barriers and head in the opposite direction, hitting a moving passenger car. Three people were killed on the spot – an adult and two children.

Last week, three people were killed and another seriously injured in an accident on the main road from Cesky Budejovice to Cesky Krumlov. According to the police, the accident was caused by a driver who was driving from Dolny Tribunin. Apparently he did not adjust his speed, entered the intersection in the opposite direction and crashed into an oncoming car.

So far, the latest victim of a traffic accident in August is a cyclist who did not survive being hit by a car in the village of Jíkev in Nymburk on Tuesday night. According to the traffic police chief, there were no fatal accidents as of Wednesday noon.

Statistics are still subject to change. An investigation may show, for example, that the true cause of death was not a traffic accident, but the driver’s health problems. In addition, on the contrary, those who died within 24 hours after the accident are added to the number of victims.
