The cover of EA Sports’ upcoming NHL 23 video game has sparked controversy. It is significantly different from its predecessors.
Neither Conor McDavid nor Cal Makar. In place of top-tier NHL stars, the NHL 23 cap was honored by forward Trevor Zegras, who ranked 76th in productivity last regular season, and forward Sarah Nurse.
She is the first ever woman in the history of the covers of the NHL video game series. The 27-year-old nurse starred at the recent Olympics in Beijing, leading 18 points (5+13) in seven Canada’s events to the gold medal.
“It is an honor to be the first woman on the NHL cover,” said Edmonton defenseman’s cousin Darnella Nurse.
“Hockey is truly for everyone, and I am delighted that NHL 23 celebrates diversity and inclusion in the sport. I hope the increased representation of women in such an outstanding game will inspire young girls around the world because hockey is for them too,” she added.
The nurse only played for the national team last year. In the only professional women’s competition, PHF was absent because it is a member of the PWHPA, which was formed after the dissolution of another professional association, the CWHL, and is still planning its own project.
Within the NHL, women have recently been talked about in connection with managerial or coaching positions.
For example, New Jersey hired Kate Madigan as assistant general manager, and Los Angeles hired Manon Ryome as a consultant. Former goalkeeper Reum made history earlier. In 1992, she became the first woman to play in the NHL, although it was only a pre-season game for Tampa.
Next to a nurse, he was featured on the cover of NHL 23 21-year-old American Zegras, who was one of the best starters last season. He finished second after German goalkeeper Moritz Seider in the Calder Trophy vote.
He mainly admired his technical virtuosity, thanks to which he permeated, for example, the morning program Good Morning America, which otherwise is not focused on hockey.
In terms of points, Zegras didn’t shine much. He collected 61 points (23 + 38) in 75 games and finished 76th in NHL productivity, behind Jakub Voráček, who scored another point.
The video game’s cover has caused more controversy than in the past due to its unconventional concept.
“Instead of McDavid, Crosby, Ovechkin, Kučerov, MacKinnon, Makar, or maybe Rookie of the Year Seider, we have Zegras, who is always demanding attention, and someone who doesn’t even play in the NHL. Honestly, this cover is untwisted” Read one of the popular comments below by EA Sports.
Another critic said, “Nothing excites hockey more than palm trees, shorts, and sneakers.” Although some people like the combination of Zegras and Nurse, the above discussion has been dominated by negative comments from people who were embarrassed by the packaging or spoke of it as nonsense.
In the past five years, Austin Matthews, Alexander Ovechkin, PK Suban and Conor McDavid have appeared on the cover of the NHL video game series. As for the Czechs, they have historically only targeted the Czech version of the game. Richard Schmehlek, Patrick Elias, Martin Rosinsky, and Jaromir Jagro succeeded.
