Malay bears are among the endangered species of Asian animals. In nature, its population is rapidly declining due to the destruction of its natural environment by cutting and burning virgin forests, the cultivation of oil palm trees, but also due to illegal hunting.

“Zoo Ústí nad Labem is involved in protecting this species not only through successful breeding of the species in human care, but also by protecting its natural environment within the Pesisir Balikpapan project,” explains Director Ilona Pšenková. “Only 180 individuals are kept in human care. Our zoo is among the most successful breeders in the world.”

This bear is already the fifth addition to the estuary estuary, and in the past two years even the only cub in the world’s zoo population.

“The Burmese female is an experienced mother. This is also the reason why she is absolutely mentally healthy and takes good care of the baby. Soon after birth, we saw that the cub had a good sucking reaction and was well cared for,” says Veronica Kochova, a Malay bear breeder. .

“So far, I’m the only one Burma lets me into the fair, so I can quickly clean the cub and check it up. Thanks to that, I was able to tell that he was a male, and that he weighed 3.4 kg in five weeks,” explains Koťová.

“We are very happy with the cub of the Malay bear, because it does not breed much in human care. Besides, we are glad that it is a male. There are about a third more females than males in the world, says chief zoologist Petra Badalikova. Now the breeders want to give the bears peace, so part of the pavilion remains closed to visitors.
